The new EXPEED 2 TM image-processing engine fuels the enhanced performance of the D7000 along with a new 39-point AF system and groundbreaking new 2,016 pixel RGB 3D Matrix Metering System to deliver amazing image quality in a variety of shooting conditions. Additionally, the D7000 D-SLR provides full 1080p HD movie capability with full-time auto focus (AF), enabling users to capture their world with both striking still and moving images.

“The D7000 D-SLR creates a new class of Nikon camera by delivering exceptional quality, control and an innovative feature set; this is a camera that enables D-SLR users to achieve a true expression of their creative vision, while concentrating primarily on image quality above all else,” said Lisa Osorio, general manager of marketing at Nikon Inc. “When you combine the innovation of the agile D7000 with the exceptional and robust line of NIKKOR lenses and accessories, the potential for D-SLR photographers and filmmakers is limitless.”

Unparalleled Performance From Unrivaled Technologies

With its new 16.2-megapixel CMOS image sensor and Nikon’s new EXPEED 2 image processing system, the D7000 D-SLR delivers superior image quality with low noise. The EXPEED 2 image-processing engine combined with a 14-bit Analog / Digital conversion brings a new level of even tonal gradations while managing color, contrast, exposure, and noise resulting in brilliant image quality. EXPEED 2 also manages the D7000’s speedy 50-millisecond shutter response, blazing AF speed and rapid six frame-per-second (fps) burst speed for up to 100 images.

The D7000 D-SLR features an all-new 39-point AF System, which includes nine center cross-type sensors that operate with more than 60 NIKKOR lenses. The 39 points in the new Multi-CAM 4800DX AF module work together to provide superior subject acquisition and fast tracking capabilities, allowing photographers to confidently capture a player stealing third from the sideline to fast-moving wildlife. Additionally, photographers can activate dynamic or single point AF, configurable in combinations of 9, 21 or 39 or a 21-point ring to match a variety of shooting styles and situations. Photographers can activate 3D tracking, which continuously follows moving subjects within the 39 AF points, highlighting the activated AF point in the viewfinder.

Utilizing Nikon’s exclusive Scene Recognition System, the camera analyzes subject information from a database containing more than 30,000 images to optimize focus, exposure and white balance. To assist in creating amazing imagery, the Scene Recognition System reads data from a groundbreaking 2,016-pixel 3D Color Matrix Meter RGB sensor that examines the scene’s brightness and color data then optimizes the camera’s performance prior to the actual exposure. Another revolutionary Nikon first, this system interprets scene data for improved control of light metering and i-TTL flash output. Additionally this new sensor allows for a new “Ambient” white balance setting which can be activated to allow warm rendering in Automatic White Balance.

Nikon Continues the Low-Light Fight

The D7000 D-SLR continues Nikon’s tradition of providing photographers the confidence to shoot in low-light, knowing they will capture high quality low-noise images. The camera’s native ISO range of 100-6400 affords the versatility to photograph in challenging lighting conditions, such as when indoors or in the evening. The ISO range can be expanded to a Hi-2 setting of 25,600, which was previously found only in Nikon FX-format territory. The resolution of the camera renders a pixel size of 4.78 µm, which allows more light to be gathered, resulting in a correctly exposed image that has less noise and finer grain.

Full 1080p HD Movies with Advanced Video Features

Building upon the popular D90 D-SLR, the Nikon D7000 captures breathtaking full 1080p HD movies with full-time autofocus and manual exposure control. To keep critical HD focus, users can choose to engage a variety of AF functions, including face priority to track up to 35 human faces, subject-tracking and normal or wide-area autofocus.

Advanced movie features also allow exposure adjustment on the fly while recording. The D7000 D-SLR offers variable frame rates and resolutions, and can record 1080p at a cinema-like 24 fps, or a web-friendly 720p at either 24 or 30 fps for up to 20 minutes per clip. Once recorded, users are able to edit and trim video clips in the camera to save time in post production. Whether utilizing a wireless or hot shoe mounted microphone, sound can be recorded via the stereo microphone input for professional audio results.

To further simplify movie shooting, Live View is activated by a single dedicated switch, and HD video recording is achieved by pressing a single button. The D7000 D-SLR also incorporates a built-in HDMI output CEC compliant (Consumer Electronic Control) that allows users to connect it to a HDTV and playback with most HDTV remote controls.

By adding versatile NIKKOR lenses to the equation, photographers can create a variety of photo perspectives to video such as isolating subjects with a shallow depth of field, and recording in low-light conditions. Combining the D7000 D-SLR with NIKKOR lenses also delivers the sharpness essential for HD video, and Nikon’s innovative Vibration Reduction (VR) II technology helps to eliminate the effects of camera shake.

No Compromise: Enhanced Build Quality, Durability and Usability

The compact design is lightweight enough for a full days use, but has a reassuring heft that hints at Nikon’s reputation for reliability. The durable camera body consists of a magnesium-alloy top and rear covers and a 150,000 cycle-rated shutter system. Additionally, the D7000 D-SLR is dust and moisture sealed and features Nikon’s dust reduction system to remove image-degrading particles from the image sensor. Among the well laid out ergonomics, users will immediately notice a new Mode Dial that eschews traditional Scene Mode icons for more advanced manual functions and two user-defined settings (U1, U2) to adapt to a users shooting style on the fly. Placed under the control wheel is a Release Mode dial, which allows access the burst modes, timer, or the Quiet Shutter, to soften the cameras operation when shooting in sensitive environments such as a ceremonies or nature.

When framing lush landscapes or tight telephoto shots from afar, users will appreciate the large, bright glass pentaprism optical viewfinder has approximately 100% frame coverage and approximately 0.94x magnification. The three-inch, 921,000-dot super-density LCD monitor with 170-degree viewing delivers bright, crisp image playback and precise Live View and movie shooting.

The D7000 D-SLR features twin SD card slots with SD, SDHC, SDXC memory card compatibility that offers several recording options including designating separate NEF (RAW) JPEG and movie files. The built-in

Ronkonkoma, NY, Sept. 21, 2010 – Sigma Corporation of America (www.sigmaphoto.com), a leading researcher, developer, manufacturer and service provider of some of the world's most impressive lines of lenses, cameras and flashes, today announced the new Sigma SD1 Digital SLR Camera, Sigma’s flagship digital SLR model, along with two upgraded lenses and two new electronic flashes, at Photokina 2010 in Cologne, Germany.

The Sigma SD1 incorporates a 46-megapixel (4,800x3,200x3 layers) 24x16mm APS-C X3 direct image sensor, offering more megapixels than any other DSLR currently on the market.

In addition, the Sigma SD1 incorporates “TRUE (Three-layer Responsive Ultimate Engine) II” image processing engine which, in combination with the 46-MP sensor, ensures that high resolution images are processed quickly with high definition and a smooth and subtle graduation of color. The new magnesium alloy makes this camera lightweight and nice to handle.

“We are extremely excited to announce the Sigma SD1 digital SLR camera, which offers photographers unrivaled image quality and represents a breakthrough in image sensor technology,” said Mark Amir-Hamzeh, general manager of Sigma Corporation of America. “The Sigma SD1 offers photographers full RGB color capture and sharper images than conventional image sensors, with a three-dimensional effect.”

Sigma is offering weather-resistance for the first time. The Sigma SD1 and the two new lenses are the first Sigma products to feature a weather-resistant design, offering protection from dust and water entering the camera and lenses.

Sigma also announced the new Sigma APO 120-300mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM which is the successor to the APO 120-300mm F2.8 EX DG HSM introduced in July 2005. This new version offers Sigma’s OS (Optical Stabilization) technology making handheld photography for this extended focal length possible. The latest optical design includes FLD glass and is weather-resistant.; all still in a compact size.

The new Sigma APO MACRO 150mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM, a large aperture medium telephoto macro lens and the successor to the APO MACRO 150mm F2.8 EX DG HSM introduced in October 2004, incorporates Sigma’s Optical Stabilization function offering the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would be otherwise possible. The weather-resistant feature is for convenient outdoor use. The size remains compact.

Sigma also announced the new Electronic Flash EF-610 DG ST, which is designed to work with the latest TTL auto exposure systems of all popular digital and film SLR cameras. Also announced was the new Electronic Flash EF-610 DG SUPER, offering illumination that covers a focal length from 24mm to 105mm.

Here is a closer look at Sigma’s new products announced at Photokina:

Sigma SD1

The Sigma SD1 is Sigma’s flagship digital SLR model, adopting a lightweight yet solid magnesium alloy for its body and O-ring sealing connections to make a weather-resistant design throughout for use in harsh conditions. The Sigma SD1 incorporates a 24x16mm APS-C X3 direct image sensor and dual “TRUE (Three-layer Responsive Ultimate Engine) II” image processing engines. The direct image sensor featured in the SD1 captures all primary RGB colors at each and every pixel location, ensuring the capture of full and complete color. Using three silicon-embedded layers of photo detectors, stacked vertically to take advantage of silicon’s ability to absorb red, green and blue light at different respective depths, it efficiently reproduces color more accurately, and offers sharper resolution, pixel for pixel, than any conventional image sensor. Since color moiré is not generated, the use of a low-pass filter is not required, meaning light and color, generated by the 46-megapixel APS-C X3 direct image sensor is captured with a three-dimensional feel.

The unique image processing algorithm of the dual TRUE II image processing engine provides high resolution power and reproduces high definition images with richly graduated tones. The SD1 adopts the TYPE 1 CF Card, and is compatible with the UDMA enabling fast processing of large amounts of data. The autofocus system features an 11 point shifted twin cross type sensor, which improves AF accuracy. The SD1 features a 3.0 inch TFT color monitor. This 460,000 pixel resolution LDC monitor benefits from a wide viewing angle, making it easy to check focusing and composition. The SD1 can be used with over 40 Sigma lenses such as ultra-wide, ultra-telephoto, macro and fisheye. The Sigma SD1 is scheduled to be available for shipment in February 2011.

Sigma APO 120-300mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM

This large aperture zoom lens features Sigma’s OS (Optical Stabilization) function and weather-resistant design throughout for use in harsh conditions. One SLD and two FLD glass elements are used for maximum correction of chromatic aberrations. The super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting, and the lens design incorporates an inner focusing and inner zooming system to ensure sharp images throughout the entire zoom range. Improved optical performance provides excellent correction of sagittal coma flare, and ensures ultra-high resolution, comparable to a fixed focal length lens. The OS function offers the use of shutter speeds approximately four stops slower than would otherwise be possible. This system enables hand held tele-photography. Incorporation of HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures quiet and high speed AF, while allowing full-time manual focus override. The addition of the optional APO TELE CONVERTER produces an ultra telephoto zoom lens with AF.

Sigma APO MACRO 150mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM

The Sigma APO MACRO 150mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM is a large aperture medium telephoto macro lens which incorporates Sigma’s original Optical Stabilizer function. The successor to the APO MACRO 150mm F2.8 EX DG HSM, introduced to the market in October 2004, offers the latest optical design technology and weather-resistance throughout for use in harsh conditions. A floating focusing system moves two different lens groups in the optical path to different positions. This system compensates for astigmatic aberration and spherical aberration and provides extremely high optical performance from infinity to 1:1 Macro. Three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements provide excellent correction of all types of aberrations and the Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting. This lens has superior peripheral brightness and provides sharp and high contrast images even at the maximum apertures. Equipped with Sigma’s own proprietary OS (Optical Stabilizer) function, this lens offers the use of shutter speeds approximately four stops slower than would otherwise be possible. The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures quiet and high speed autofocus as well as full-time manual focus capability. This lens has a rounded nine-blade diaphragm creating a smooth blur to the out-of-focus areas of the image. It is also possible to use this lens with Sigma’s optional APO Tele Converters.

Electronic Flash EF-610 DG SUPER

The EF-610 DG SUPER features a powerful Guide Number of 61/m (200/ft) and is designed to work with the latest TTL auto exposure systems of all popular digital and film SLR cameras. The autozoom function automatically sets the optimum illumination angle in accordance with the lens’ focal length in a range from 24mm to 105mm. When the built-in Wide Panel is used, the flash can cover an angle of 17mm. For bounce flash, the flashgun head can be tilted up by 90 degrees, to the left by 180 degrees, or to the right by 90 degrees. In the upcoming weeks and months we’ll build a network that serves the demand of consumers throughout Europe. And along with that, we’ll take steps to create an even broader public awareness of our brand to support our new European partnerships.”

ThinkTank Turns 5!

Your browser may not support display of this image.

Think Tank Photo co-founders (L-R) Kurt Rogers, Deanne Fitzmaurice, Doug Murdoch,

and Mike Sturm.

A Think Tank for Camera Bags

Think Tank Photo Celebrates 5th Year Anniversary

SANTA ROSA, CALIF. U.S.A – One most often associates think tanks with groups of analysts pondering such heady issues as energy policy and global peace. But a think tank dedicated solely to camera bags? This didn’t stop designer Doug Murdoch from doing just that five years ago when he launched Think Tank Photo (www.thinktankphoto.com).

Think Tank Photo’s roots are those of a classic American start-up. Like Hewlett-Packard and Apple, Think Tank Photo literally began in Murdoch’s poorly lit garage in Northern California. There, surrounded by bolts of fabric, sewing machines, and a cutting table, he created a revolutionary vision for the camera bag business.

Like a classic think tank, Murdoch founded his company on the principle that its output—the camera bags –should be the result of soliciting input from hundreds of professional photographers and having his team of world-class designers mull, sift, argue, prototype, and refine different designs.

“As someone who had made a good living designing bags for numerous brands, I could have comfortably continued doing that work,” said Murdoch. “But I knew there was a very big opportunity—a new business model—that had the potential to revolutionize our industry.“

For years, Murdoch and his former colleague, Mike Sturm, had the opportunity to design products for the photo industry and observe how other camera bag companies determined

what to create. They concluded that camera bag requirements specific to professional photographers were not really being met.

“This was wrong,” said Murdoch, “and an opportunity.”

As lower prices were becoming such a dominant force in camera bags, he realized that there was a niche available at the high end for tailored, well constructed bags. What the company might lose in volume, it could make up in superior design and quality that justified higher prices. Thus, the underlying business model for Think Tank Photo was born.

While Murdoch and Sturm teased apart the industry and probed for the hidden opportunity, their thoughts kept going back to two photojournalists from their past who had wanted to provide input into their designs: Pulitzer-prize winner Deanne Fitzmaurice and Kurt Rogers. With over 50 years of combined front-line photojournalism experience—from wars to weddings, from sports to politics—Fitzmaurice and Rogers had seen and photographed it all.

They all wanted Think Tank to be an actual think tank, a place where the very best photojournalists and other professional photographers would have a powerful voice in designs, policies, and how the company grew.

Their newly released Sling-O-Matic™ shoulder bag is a classic example of how the company’s “think tank” solved a basic problem that had been plaguing the industry. Sling bags, which are shoulder bags that until now could be worn over only one shoulder, cause fatigue.

“That is exactly the problem we solved with our new Sling-O-Matic™ sling bag,” said Murdoch. “Professional lenses and bodies are really, really heavy. A full day in the field with a traditional sling bag slung over one shoulder invites exhaustion and muscle and ligament damage.”

Think Tank Photo’s Sling-O-Matic™ is the photo industry’s first sling bag that can be easily switched back and forth to be worn on either shoulder. With one smooth motion, the Sling-O-Matic™ can be quickly switched to the opposite shoulder without losing the characteristics that have made sling bags popular among photographers.

In only five years Murdoch and his colleagues have been able to grow Think Tank Photo into a major force in the global photography accessories industry.

“Our goal now is make our gear available to every serious photographer in the world,” said Murdoch. “We work with retailers and distributors in all corners of the world and invite others to represent us in their countries.

“Starting Think Tank was a tremendous personal risk. But, based on my relationship with photographers I knew that if we truly listened to their needs and created products that reflected those needs, that they would support us in kind. By staying true to our vision and mission, our dream of being an innovation-driven and customer-focused company has come true.”

MELVILLE, NY (September 8, 2010) – With advanced functions and features similar to those found in Nikon’s line of award winning and critically acclaimed D-SLRs, Nikon Inc. today introduced the COOLPIX P7000, the ultimate compact camera that’s ready to take on most any photo assignment. At home in a pro’s gadget bag or in the hands of a spirited enthusiast, passionate photographers of all levels will benefit from the P7000’s high performance, extensive manual controls, stunning image quality and advanced shooting functions.

“The COOLPIX P7000 represents the best of both worlds. It is an exciting compact camera offering from Nikon, as it not only provides expanded creative control found in digital SLR cameras, but also provides photo enthusiasts with the portability and simplicity of COOLPIX digital cameras,” said Bo Kajiwara, director of marketing, Nikon Inc. “The P7000 is the perfect complement to an advanced photographer’s D-SLR, and it inspires the entry-level consumer to explore the boundaries of their photographic capabilities and fulfill their creative vision.”

ISO sensitivity ranges from ISO 100 to 6400 (expandable to ISO 12,800 in low noise Night Mode) to ensure incredibly sharp, crisp images when shooting in low-light or photographing fast-moving subjects. The P7000 also offers a variety of functions that enable superior rendering when shooting at high sensitivities, including a Low Noise Night Mode and a Noise Reduction Filter. Thoughtful engineering has led to the addition of features that will be welcome to current D-SLR users. The Zoom Memory function allows the camera’s 28-200mm (35mm equivalent) lens to be used in a way that simulates use of a prime lens, ideal for shooting at a preferred angle of view. The P7000 also adds controls and buttons for key features like ISO, white balance, bracketing and exposure compensation. The new innovative and independent Quick Menu dial ensures easy access to key functions with the comfort of analog operation. Advanced users will also enjoy the benefits of shooting RAW/NRW* files for creative freedom, and macro abilities as close as 0.8 inches.

A COOLPIX first, users can now record audio with an external stereo microphone via the microphone input. An accessory microphone or Nikon Speedlight can be mounted on the P7000’s hot shoe.

The Night Portrait mode combines consecutive shots of the background while the subject is taken using the flash, allowing challenging night scenes to be easily captured during handheld shooting and eliminating any subject movement. To further help deliver crisp, sharp photos, the S8100 features a 4-Way vibration reduction (VR) Image Stabilization System with ISO settings up to 3200.

Other functions benefitting from the lower noise and exceptional image quality of the new CMOS image sensor include an advanced Backlight shooting function with an in-camera high dynamic range (HDR) function, which merges images of the same scene to achieve a single image with a broad range of tonal detail for a frame-worthy shot. Additionally, the S8100’s advanced Night Landscape mode combines a series of five consecutive shots taken at a fast shutter speed into a single image with reduced noise for when taking handheld shots. From romantic candlelit dinners to capturing the bright lights of New York City at night, the COOLPIX S8100 ensures that no low-light moment will be left in the dark.

Creative Versatility

The COOLPIX S8100 helps unleash the user’s photographic potential with enhanced shooting and editing functions, including a new Mode Dial conveniently placed next to the shutter-release button for quick and easy access to shooting modes. The COOLPIX S8100 also features the Creative Slider, which simplifies adjusting brightness, saturation and color tone in-camera. Other in-camera editing functions include Quick Retouch and D-Lighting, giving users the ability to adjust their images during playback.

To further help the process of composing and sharing photos and movies, the COOLPIX S8100 boasts a 3.0-inch ultra high resolution (921,000-dot) Clear Color Display with a wide viewing angle and anti-glare coating. Additional must-have features in the S8100 include 17 scene modes, including the Scene Auto Selector, which automatically recognizes the shooting situation and adjusts camera settings accordingly for great photos in any environment. For outstanding portraits, the S8100 features Nikon’s Smart Portrait System, which incorporates a series of automatic functions including In-Camera Red-Eye Fix™, improved Face-Priority AF, Blink Warning, Smile Timer and Skin Softening to flatter even the most camera-shy subject.

Availability and Pricing

The COOLPIX S8100 will be available late September 2010 for $299.95* MSRP in a choice of attractive colors including black, red and gold.

Think Tank Photo’s New Sling-O-Matic™ Series

The First Sling Bags with Easily Reversible Shoulder Straps

SANTA ROSA, CALIF – Think Tank Photo today announced that in October it will release the Sling-O-Matic, the photo industry’s first sling bag that can be easily switched back and forth to either shoulder. The Sling-O-Matic’s adjustable, fully padded shoulder strap “automatically” slides along a set of rails to change which shoulder the bag can be worn on.

This innovation is the solution to the problem inherent with sling bags: they are designed to be to worn over one shoulder only. With one smooth motion, the Sling-O-Matic can be quickly switched to the opposite shoulder without losing the characteristics that have made sling bags popular among photographers.

The Sling-O-Matic series offers three unique bags to choose from, depending on the photo gear a photographer needs to carry. The Sling-O-Matic 10 can carry a pro-size DSLR and three to four lenses, including a 70-200 f2.8. The Sling-O-Matic 20 and Sling-O-Matic 30 can each carry a pro-size DSLR and four to six lenses, including a 70-200 f2.8. The Sling-O-Matic 30 also features a separate laptop compartment for carrying a 15.4” laptop.

Key Features:

• Industry’s first sling bag that can be easily switched back and forth to either shoulder.

• Each bag fits a DSLR with up to a 70-200 f2.8 lens with lens hood in position.

• All bags are flexible to fit most pro size DSLRs with a lens attached.

• Discreetly stylized to avoid obviously appearing like a camera bag.

• Long side pocket for carrying a tripod, large water bottle, or other accessories.

• Large handles on three sides.

• Wide zippered pockets on front, back, and side.

• Business card pocket for identification.

• Removable/adjustable straps and waist belt for additional stability.

• Small storage pocket for storing removable straps.

• Fully padded compartments for protection.

• Seam-sealed rain cover included.

“However flawed their basic design, sling bags have long been a favorite among photographers, especially those who like carrying their gear on their shoulders,” said Doug Murdoch, Think Tank Photo president and lead designer. “With the Sling-O-Matic we solved one of their biggest problems, which is that carrying heavy equipment solely on one shoulder can cause pain. Within just a few seconds, photographers can quickly switch the load – and the weight – from one shoulder to the other.”
